JEE Main Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) 2018 - General


Q. When the candidates appearing in class 12th examination in 2018 or improvement examination in 2018 will enter their roll number of class 12th?

Ans:  The option of entering Roll Number is not mandatory, if it is allotted then mention it, otherwise leave it empty and fill the remaining options in the JEE Main 2018.


Q. What are HSC vocational courses?

Ans: Different states can have different HSC vocational courses, so students need to verify it with their respective state.


Q. Is upload of thumb impression mandatory while filling JEE Main 2018 application form?

Ans: Thumb impression is not required to fill the online application of JEE Main 2018.


Q. How will an NRI or a foreign student enter his/her mobile number?

Ans: Such candidates should enter the mobile number of their relative residing in India.


JEE Main FAQ 2018 related to Eligibility


Q. Who is eligible for JEE Main 2018?

Ans: To be eligible for JEE Main 2018, candidates need to meet the following conditions:

  • Candidates mus thave passed 10+2 or any equivalent qualifying examination in 2016 or 2017; or

  • Those who are appearing in 10+2 or any equivalent qualifying examination in 2018 are also eligible

  • Candidates who appeared in 10+2 in 2015, did not pass in 2015, but passed in 2016 are not eligible to appear in JEE Main 2018.

Q. If a candidate has passed in 2016/2017 and has appeared for improvement in 2018, what he will fill in the academic details section.

Ans: Select the year of passing 10+2 as 2016/2017 and enter the roll number, name of the board and other details of 2016/2017 in the application form. Select ‘yes’ in the column – appearing for improvement examination. The roll number of improvement examination 2018 may be filled at the time of downloading admit cards of JEE Main.


Q. What is the State of Eligibility for the Improvement Candidates/Institution Abroad/NIOS?

Ans: If a candidate has passed 10+2 or equivalent qualifying examination from one state but appeared for improvement from another state, in that case the state code of eligibility will be of the state the candidate has originally passed the exam and not the state from where he/she appeared for improvement.


Indian nationals passing the equivalent qualifying examination from an institution abroad, the state of eligibility will be determined on the basis of permanent address in India as given in the passport of the candidate. Candidate passed/appearing class 10+2 from NIOS should select the State of Eligibility according to the state in which the study centre is located. The state of eligibility is not applicable for the candidates belonging to Nepal /Bhutan/Foreign/OCI/PIO.


Q. Are candidates who appear in Paper 2 eligible for admission to B.Arch. course in IITs?

Ans: No, candidates who appear in Paper 2 are eligible for admission to B. Arch. courses at NITs/SPAs and other CFTIs only. For admission to B.Arch. in IITs, there is separate procedure.


Q. What is eligibility for Diploma Students in JEE Main 2018?

Ans: Yes, to appear in JEE (Advanced) a diploma holder can apply in JEE (Main) 2017 but his/her rank and score for JEE (Main) will not be declared as diploma holders cannot apply for admission in NITs and CFTIs through JEE (Main) channel.


JEE Main 2018 FAQ - Aadhaar Related Queries


Q. Candidate who have recently submitted the request for updation in Aadhaar details (including biometric updation) and unable to apply with the updated Aadhaar Card Details.

Ans: Such Candidates have to apply for JEE Main by entering 14 digits Aadhaar Enrolment ID/UR No. (Including slash) printed on the slip issued by aadhaar centre after submitting updation request.


Q. Aadhaar authentication may fail in the first step of application submission due to following reasons:-

a. The candidate has not entered the details as mentioned on the Aadhaar card.

b. The candidate’s Aadhaar biometric is not updated.

Ans: In the above case, candidates must do the following:


A. Verify whether they have entered the details exactly as they are mentioned on the Aadhaar card.

B. Submit a correction request at Aadhaar centre for biometric updation and apply for JEE Main 2018 by entering 14 digits Aadhaar Enrolment ID/UR No. (Including slash) printed on the slip issued by aadhaar centre after submitting updation request.


Q. The date of birth is not fully or is incorrectly mentioned in Aadhaar card or only birth year is mentioned.

Ans: In such cases, candidates must submit a correction request at Aadhaar centre and then apply for JEE Main by entering 14 digits Aadhaar Enrolment ID/UR No. printed on the slip issued by aadhaar centre after submitting updation request.           


Q. The name of the candidate in Aadhaar in not exactly similar or not in same pattern as in school records.

Ans: Such candidates should submit a correction request at Aadhaar centre and apply with the 14 digits Aadhaar Enrolment ID/UR No. issued by aadhaar centre after submitting updation request.




Fill the application form of JEE Main 2018 with old Aadhaar details and thereafter submit a correction request at Aadhaar centre. The updated details in Aadhaar may be corrected in JEE Main appliocation form at a later stage by the process which will be notified in due course of time.


Q. The name of father/ mother doesn’t match those mentioned in school records. The address mentioned in Aadhaar has been changed due to transfer or some other reason.

Ans: These particular are not being matched with Aadhaar data so the candidates should correctly fill these particulars as per school records. The present/permanent address may also be filled accordingly since CBSE do not send any communication on the candidates’ address.


Q. How do candidates of Assam/J&K/Meghalaya who have no Aadhaar Card apply for JEE Main 2018?

Ans: Candidates who have passed or are appearing in 10+2 from the states of J&K, Assam & Meghalaya need to enter the passport number, ration card number, bank account number or any other valid Government identity number. It must be noted that these candidates will be able to an exam centre in their respective states only.


Q. Can candidates from Assam/J&K/Meghalaya with Aadhaar card choose en exam centre outside their home state?

Ans: Candidates who have passed or are appearing in 10+2 from the states of J&K, Assam & Meghalaya and have Aadhaar card can choose any exam centre across India. Candidate must ensure that details like name, date of birth & gender used for filling JEE Main 2018 online application form are the same as in 10, 10+2 Certificate/Marksheet.


Q. How can candidates outside India (PIO/OCI/NRI) apply for JEE Main 2018 without Aadhaar?

Ans: Candidates outside India may apply through Passport details.   


JEE Main FAQs 2018 - Filling the Application Form


Q. If the uploaded photograph doesn’t have name and date, would the form be rejected?

Ans: It is recommended that the name of the candidate and date on which the photograph is taken is mentioned on the photograph, but if uploaded photograph does not have the details, the form will not be rejected. Also, no correction is required in such a case and the candidate will be issued admit card for appearing in JEE Main 2018.


Q. Continuous time out or file not found error occurs while filling online application of JEE Main 2018. What is the solution?

Ans: Use Mozilla Firefox/Internet Explorer (above 9.0) and good internet connection while filling online JEE Main 2018 Application Form. In case of continuous times out clear cookies and history of the browser and fill in off-peak hours.


Q. While paying the fee, what should a candidate can do in case of failed transaction?

Ans: If the payment status of online transaction (by credit/debit card) is not communicated by payment gateway in real time then fee payment is not completed and candidate will not be able to download acknowledgement page. In such cases, the candidate has to pay the fees again either through online transaction or by e- challan and download the acknowledgement page. For failed transactions through credit/debit card, the amount will be refunded within 7 to 10 days.


In case, fee payment is made through e-challan and the fee is not updated on the website, the candidate should contact the concerned bank/branch for updation of fee. Even if the challan is not updated by the bank till last date, such candidates should send the copy of paid e-challan through e-mail on [email protected]


JEE Main 2018 FAQs - Correction in Online Application form


Q.  Will a candidate be allowed to change the mode of examination?

Ans: The candidate can change mode of examination from pen & paper examination to computer based examination (CBT). However change of mode from computer-based to pen-paper based examination is not allowed.


Q. What mistakes can be corrected when the corrections will be allowed by the Board?

Ans: To be able to make corrections, candidates must have paid the fee and completed all the steps of online application form of JEE (Main) 2018. The candidates can modify all the particulars of the application form, including city of examination, Aadhaar card details, Paper - 2 to Paper -1 and vice versa or select both papers of their application form during the facility of correction. Also, any balance fee due to correction in particulars, will have to be paid by the candidates during that period.


Q. The candidate applied for both paper 1 & Paper 2 but do not want to appear in Paper – 2 or Paper -1.

Ans: It is not mandatory for candidates to appear in any specific paper, as they can appear in the paper of their choice. However, no refund of fee will be made for the forfeited paper.


Q. What action is to be taken, if the candidate has submitted more than one application?

Ans: Normally, at the time of issuing admit card of JEE Main 2018 both the applications will be merged and only one admit card will be issued. However, the candidate must send an e-mail to [email protected] mentioning application numbers of both the applications and clearly specifying the application number which they want to be considered.


Q. If the candidates fail to book a date for the online examination after paying the fees or the capacity in the selected city is full, how will they know about the date and session of the examination?

Ans: If no selection is made, the candidate will be assigned a random slot/date as per the availability of the same in the examination city selected by the candidate. Details of session and slot will be mentioned on the JEE Main 2018 admit card of the candidate.
